The Secret is a movie in documentary style about the law of attraction, and making the universe listen to us. It’s spiritual but also deeply grounded in objective, empirical observation. When I watched The Secret, after seeing on Oprah and some other publications, I was immediately blown away. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, and quickly came to the realization that we really do determine the course our lives take. The Secret goes through historical information and personal testimony that is both life affirming and deeply moving. So many people feel like they’re victims of fate or God, but really we’re victims of our own negative thinking. As a skeptic, at first I thought, oh no, more pseudo-scientific spiritual nonsense — but I grew to understand just how powerful our thoughts are, how the universe listens to us, as intelligent and powerful beings. The Secret sort of awakened me to the immense influence we have on our destiny, and the impossible complexity and beauty of the universe. Of course, you can’t just sit around and attract things to you — something I think a lot of people get confused about. Part of attraction is making a conscious effort to move towards the goals you want, and and not just being a passive participant in the events that happen in your life. I liked the metaphor at the beginning of The Secret: you can’t just sit and think and think and think “I want to win the lottery” and be disappointed when you don’t attract millions of dollars. You have do the thing that drives you most, that you believe in wholeheartedly, attract it to you, and work towards it. That’s what the universe listens to, because you’re actively changing it.
