The love of Goldilocks
by Atul Bhakay
Goldilocks is the name of a female labrador that I have. We brought her home from a vineyard where she was one of the many dogs on that farm. She used to be tied and because there was no one to take specific care of her, she had a lot of ticks and fleas when we brought her home. She was also dirty and smelly.
The first thing that we did was to call the vet, who gave her the required injections like anti-rabies and de-worming for instance. A nice bath and a nutritious meal followed by her very own mattress set the tone for domesticating this farm dog.
Today Goldilocks is 8 years old and simply adorable. She gives us unconditional love. Even when I come home at 2AM at night, when I open the house door, there she is wagging her tail. Normally she sits down quietly on her mattress, but at 7AM and 7PM, the two times that we feed her, she gets restless and literally pleads with us till she has been fed with Indian bread and pieces of chicken.
When she wants to go out for her call of nature, she comes to me and starts barking loudly. Inside the four walls of a house, this barking can become deadfening and so there is no option, but to take her out immediately! Intelligent, isn't she.
On Sundays, I give her a bath. She just loves her bath immensely. While I put the shampoo in a bowl, and while I take her chain and tie it to the balcony railing, she follows me, watching me do all these activities. When I bring out the buckets with warm water, again she follows me continuously wagging her tail. Throughout the bath, too she is wagging her tail as if to say that she is enjoying it and telling me so.
When I am on the laptop, as I am now, she is sitting a few feet away and looking at me in a way only a labrador can look. At 5Am, when the alarm on my mobile rings, she comes running by my bedside and starts wagging her tail looking at me. Then she gradually starts moaning and pleading me to take her out to urinate!!
This just gives you a gist of how loving Goldilocks is and how she is able to communicate even though she cannot speak!!
