The Lives of Others (2006)
This past semester I was in a western civilization class taught by one of the best history teachers that I have ever had. It was in his class that I saw what I think is a thought-provoking and life changing movie. The title of the film is “The Lives of Others”. It was actually a German drama which depicts East Berlin during the Cold War. The film begins by introducing one of the hardened Stasi investigators in charge of information collection and stomping out any threats to the GDR. His name is officer Wiesler. His next assignment is to spy on a playwright, Georg Dreyman. As Wiesler he begins to learn more about Dreyman’s life, he begins to be wrapped up into it and starts to put a face to the people he is turning in. I do not want to spoil any of the suspense or the ending so I will leave it by saying officer Wiesler begins to change his beliefs about what is good after spying on Dreyman. I believe this film is one about the law of attraction because the main character Georg Dreyman has such a difficult life and many obstacles are put in front of him throughout the film, but he continues to fight or the greater good. His pursuit of doing the right thing is contagious and you begin to see that in the most unlikely of people, officer Wiesler. One of the final scenes in the movie shows that Dreyman has written a book after the fall of the Berlin wall about being a good man. This movie really does make a person re-evaluate their morals and show that humans are attracted to doing the just thing. Because of this movie, I have changed my perspective on what a good man is and how to go about being one. I continue to strive for that today. I highly recommend it.
