Indian Family System: The Concept, Practices and Current Relevance
Though I read a lot of books but the book which has inspired me the most is Indian Family System by Bal Ram Singh. In this book Singh examines the joint family system in India and its relevance in the present times. Joint family system has its roots in ancient India where four generations lived together under one roof. The book deals with the changing social norms, value systems and human behaviour over time and views the role of religion in promoting human values and fellowship which are an essential ingredient of joint family norms. In joint family all the members had strong bonds with each others. But the impact of the modern forces of westernisation, industrialization and modernization has given a death blow to joint family and lead to its disintegration into nuclear families. People now prefer to stay in nuclear families alone.
This book has taught me the importance of joint families. Not only this, it has also taught me as to how joint families act as a vehicle for accumulating wealth and serving and benefiting all. In Joint family all the members are ready to help each other in times of need which is very important now a day. This book has inspired and motivated me a lot to rethink about joint families and to integrate the family so that we can live together jointly.
