I need them, they need me

by Patrick
(Chicago, IL)

One cold fall day I heard meowing near my door. I looked out onto my porch and there was a little cat not older than 1 year old, a tiny thing. It was spooked at first, but eventually realized that it could depend on me for some food. Eventually it got the nerve to just sit on top of me for warmth, right there on my porch while the cold wind gusted through. This became a daily ritual, and I often worried about the little guy when I would part ways during the night. One time I didn't see him for a few days, and I got really concerned. When he finally showed up, and had a scar on his face that seemed to be infected, I knew it was time to commit.

I like taking care of my cats. They came to me and I to them equally, because I enjoy what they provide as much as they do of what I can. It's a mutual fighting off of the cold elements of the world on both of our parts.
